Skin Care Through The Seasons



Seasonal changes often affect the skin adversely and require specialized skin care for people of all ages and all types of skin. Skin is the largest organ in our body and one of the most vulnerable to external elements like heat and moisture. Whether it is the extreme cold of winter, the harsh heat of the summer or the humidity of the monsoon, our skin requires protection, nourishment and healing to cope with the damage it faces. For those with skin conditions like acne a proper seasonal skin care routine is essential to maintaining healthy skin. However, even for those blessed with great skin, paying attention to the requirements of your skin in different seasons is a must to prevent premature aging and damage to the skin. A good skin care routine in every season involves three basic steps cleansing, toning and moisturizing.

Winter is one of the harshest months for the skin. Winter skin care carries additional stress on moisturizing due to the dryness experienced by the skin. Lips, elbows, feet and hands tend to be constantly dry and in extreme cases could also crack and bleed. While plenty of creams and lotions are available for tackling winter dryness there are also several natural ingredients that help deal with winter skin gently. Vitamin E oil, Jojoba oil, petroleum jelly are just some. Check for such ingredients in serums and lotions you buy. Exfoliation of dry skin and regular application of Olive or Coconut oil can help maintain smooth and soft skin.

In summer most people find that they have to deal with tanning and pigmentation of the skin. Hence sunscreens are the primary basis of summer skin care. Ensure you have a spectrum sunscreen giving protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Use plenty of talcum powder in armpits and groin areas to prevent bacterial build up with sweat and bathe and change clothes twice a day.

The other season to beware of is monsoon. Several people with acne find that humidity causes their acne to worsen. This is because the combination of heat and humidity can lead to bacterial infections in the skin. Looking for non-comedogenic ingredients in products could help prevent such problems. Sunscreens remain important for skin care in this season as well. Always look for Titanium Oxide and Zinc Oxide sunblocks for effective sun protection without absorption of the product into the skin. For the spring just continue a basic routine and stay away from skin irritants like pollen while enjoying the best weather in the year.

The most important part of skin care for any season is to provide adequate nourishment and rest to the skin. Drinking at least 6-8 cups of water daily and ensuring proper sleep will go a long way in keeping skin healthy. A well balanced diet with adequate vitamins and minerals is also important. Avoid smoking and protect your skin from environmental pollutants. All this will slow the aging process of the skin and allow your skin to absorb the required nutrients.
