Choosing a Safe and Natural Sunscreen

Many people are unaware of the different chemicals used in sunscreens, and their effects on the human body. The sunscreen industry has influenced consumers into thinking that it's very dangerous to be in the sun and that using sunscreen is very safe. Sun exposure is actually healthy for your skin, in moderation, and using certain types of sunscreen can be bad for your health. Choosing a natural sunscreen is a better way to go.

Your body creates vitamin D when it is exposed to UVB rays, which are blocked by sunscreens. Try to get at around 5-30 minutes of exposure a few times a week without wearing sunscreen. Your body will build a tolerance to the sun if you gradually expose yourself to it over time. Just make sure you don't burn by spending too much time under direct sunlight.

When you are going to be in the sun for longer periods of time apply a
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide work by blocking the sun's rays, while avobenzone absorbs the sun's rays. Some studies have shown that free radicals are created by the absorption of the sun's rays by avobenzone, and other absorbing sunscreen ingredients. These sunscreens are only less damaging than the sun if they create fewer free radicals than direct sunlight would. Many people are in the habit of liberally applying sunscreen and then reapplying later in the day, which increases the amount of free radicals produced.

Here are some tips for choosing a natural sunscreen:
  1. Choose a sunscreen with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide.
  2. Do not use sprays or powdered sunscreens to avoid breathing in chemicals. Titanium dioxide, in particular, is very bad if inhaled.
  3. Sunscreens with SPF over 30 only block 1-2% more radiation than SPF 30.
  4. Avoid sunscreens with vitamin A.
Here are some recommended sunscreen brands:

Soleo Organics contains zinc oxide as its active ingredient. It also contains a mixture of natural ingredients. Soleo is paraben-free, PABA free, and SLS-free. The packaging is made from recycled materials, making this a very eco-friendly sunscreen.
