Excessive Formaldehyde Found in Hair Smoothing Products Can Cause Hair Loss

Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry and Salma Hayek have made the Brazilian Blowout sell like crazy. Once the public knew that these celebs are on this new hair straightening / smoothing treatment, everyone is dying to try it.
And the result? Totally straight and smooth hair, everyone can have celebrity tailor made hair in just an hour and a half.
To make things clear, the Brazilian Blow Out is actually a trade name, and the term was just tagged to this type of hair styling probably because it was the first product that came out. What it basically does is it temporary breaks the sulphur bonds of the hair and then fills up the bonds with keratin. Keratin is a protein that is present in hair and nails. This is perfect for straightening curly hair since irregular or broken sulphur bonds are actually causing the curls.
But be warned, Health Canada has been examining these products since a lot of salon stylists and customers have been complaining of skin irritations, burning in the eyes, nose, and throat, difficulty breathing, and hair loss.
Many of the salon stylists claim that the ironing part of the styling process is the most irritating. This is the part when a hot iron plate is used to slowly prim the hair straight. Any moisture remaining in the hair is instantly vaporized and is seen as a cloud of smoke as the iron passes along the hair.
Another point to consider is since most salons are air conditioned and in a closed environment, the concentrations of the fumes linger within the shop, endangering not just the stylist but other customers as well.
The most obvious and devastating part of this famous hair straightening treatment is hair loss. Customers complain of noticeable increase in hair fall within days after treatment. Sometimes, clumps of hair are literally getting combed out after the treatment.
The health institution found increased levels of formaldehyde among these hair smoothing products. Formaldehyde is used as a preservative in cosmetics and levels not exceeding 0. 2% is allowed. Top three of the product offenders are Brazilian Blowout Smoothing Solution with 8.4% levels of formaldehyde, next is Brazilian Thermal Reconstruction at 7.0% and Global Keratin Taming System with Juvexin Strawberry Resistant at 4.4 %.
Formaldehyde is a colourless, flammable, strong smelling organic compound used mainly as a preservative. Amazingly, this compound is found naturally in the environment and also produced by some plants. But prolonged exposure can lead to skin irritations and difficulty breathing or can lead to death if ingested. Cancer is also linked to formaldehyde which is labeled as a possible human carcinogen.

  1. Hi Jenny,

This is a great article that really got me thinking! I don't do the blowout, but I did know it was of concern. You have inspired me to do more research into this so that I can also do a blog post on my site :)

    Keep up the great work!
