The Beauty Benefits of Whey Protein

Many of you are familiar with whey protein and the dietary and nutritional benefits it provides.  I personally use a whey protein based chocolate powder that I drink in a shake about 30 minutes after I work out.  Whey is also available in supplement form and can be found in snack foods and power bars.  I use it in conjunction with my diet to continue to build and keep muscle as I age.

I’m a big believer of the thought that beauty starts on the inside.  Whey protein contains many beneficial nutrients for the body.  A strong antioxidant called Glutathione can assist the immune system, and Lactofirm, a natural anti microbial which boosts the healing process, are both found in whey protein. This type of protein is an important natural source of branched chain amino acids, which is the only amino acid that our bodies can metabolize.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out whey protein has many beauty uses and benefits for the skin, hair, and nails in addition to being great for the body and over all general health. Whey protein, whether ingested or used topically, can easily become part of a daily beauty routine.

For example, the antioxidant Glutathione that keeps us healthy on the inside also works to fight free radicals from the surface of the skin.  Free radicals cause the signs of ageing such as dryness and wrinkling of the skin.  Whey protein can be made into a paste and applied to the skin as a face mask.  It can also be dissolved in witch hazel to be used as an astringent.

Collagen is another important building block for beautiful skin.  Collagen keeps our skin firm and elastic.  Collagen is a structural tissue which provides elasticity to the skin. It comprises 30 percent of the body’s total protein and helps strengthen skin, blood vessel, bones and teeth. Consuming whey protein, whether as a supplement or in a food product, will provide you with ample collagen to keep your skin firm and healthy.

Whey protein also makes an excellent shampoo and conditioner.  Hair is constructed with protein itself and whey protein literally feeds your hair.  For very soft and shiny hair, mix whey with water, apply to hair and let it sit for 5 minutes.  Rinse out and mix up some whey with beer and use that as the conditioner.

Whether whey protein is part of your regular diet or used as a beauty treatment, it’s a good product that works on several levels to give you naturally beautiful skin, hair and nails, as well as a healthy inner body!
